About this course

This qualification is designed for individuals who were previously authorised MOT Testers and are returning to testing after a prolonged lapse.

DVSA guidance requires testers with a lapse of over 5 years to complete initial tester training again, followed by a DVSA demonstration test, before they can resume testing.

This course provides a structured route back into testing, allowing experienced technicians to rebuild their knowledge and skills in line with current MOT standards and expectations.

All MITA courses are developed by professionals who have done the job — or are still doing it. The content is designed to reflect real-world MOT testing, helping experienced testers re-engage with the role in a practical and focused way.

Training is delivered through a combination of classroom-based learning and practical activity with a MITA-approved regional training provider.

What will you learn
  • Current MOT testing standards and procedures
  • DVSA rules, guidance, and expectations
  • Key changes to the MOT scheme since you last tested
  • Common compliance risks and how to avoid them
  • Best practice for carrying out MOT tests to current standards
  • Practical refresher of testing skills and processes
Course duration

This course is delivered over 4 days using structured, modular learning.

Assessment is carried out throughout the course using sectional multiple-choice examinations, allowing knowledge to be demonstrated and reinforced as you progress. This approach ensures competence is rebuilt step by step, rather than relying on a single end-point test.

Delivery

This qualification is delivered via MITA-approved centres through structured classroom-based training, supported by practical activity. The course is delivered using a modular approach, allowing learners to rebuild knowledge progressively, with assessment integrated throughout to reinforce understanding.

Delivery is focused on practical application within real-world testing environments, ensuring learners regain confidence and competence in line with current DVSA expectations. All delivery is subject to MITA quality assurance processes to ensure consistency and compliance.

Assessment

Method: Sectional online Multiple-Choice Examinations (integrated throughout the course)
Grading: Pass/Fail

Who is this course designed for?
  • Former MOT Testers returning after a long-term absence
  • Testers with a lapse of over 5 years
  • Individuals re-entering the motor trade after time away
  • Testers who need to fully retrain to meet current DVSA requirements

Entry requirements
This course is intended for individuals who have previously been authorised MOT Testers. You should have prior experience carrying out MOT tests and a working understanding of testing procedures.

Progression routes

Following completion of this qualification, learners are required to undertake a DVSA demonstration test. Successful completion of both the training and the demonstration test enables learners to return to MOT testing in line with DVSA requirements and resume their role within a Vehicle Testing Station.
